Fungal Nail Infection
If you suffer from a fungal nail infection (‘fungal nails’) medically known as onychomycosis then you may benefit from our ClearSteps laser procedure.
This procedure is a revolutionary treatment of fungal nail infections that is patient-friendly and effective. It can be used to treat both toenails and fingernails suffering from the infection. This infection can be caused by a number of bacteria including yeasts, molds and dermatophytes which can all be eliminated with our laser. We offer this treatment at our Kotara, Newcastle laser centre.
What is Onychomycosis
Onychomycosis is an infection of the nails caused by fungus in the nail and in the nail bed. The condition causes the nail to grow rough, discoloured (yellow) and thick, and it is very hard to treat with topical medication. The goal of our onychomycosis laser treatment is to eliminate the fungi utilising laser light technology so that your nails can once again be restored to their original pristine state.
ClearSteps Technology
In order to perform the ClearSteps procedure we use the Nd:YAG setting of our SP Dynamis laser which is a powerful, deep penetrating laser. This type of laser is ergonomically designed to heat evenly, and is it is deep penetrating. It can eliminate fungi that is present within the skin tissue and in the depth of the nail bed. The laser eliminates and weakens parasitic fungi which are the cause of onychomycosis and fungal nail infections.
Your condition will be treated in 3 steps:
- Your nails will be filed to a manageable state and any deformities and overgrowth will be removed. This will allow the laser to penetrate deeply into the site. For best results all toenails or fingernails should be treated whether they appear infected or not.
- The Nd:YAG laser pulses will be applied in a circular motion which will cover the entire nail. During this part of the procedure you may feel your nail and treatment site heat up slightly.
- We will then treat the surrounding area with the Nd:YAG laser so that all parasitic fungi is treated with the laser. Many fungi work their way beyond the nail and nail bed into the rest of the skin tissue which is why the entire area needs to be treated.
How many treatments will I need?
In order to eradicate all of the parasitic fungi it’s important that you have 4 treatments over a 4 week period (one per week). You will be required to have 7 days between each treatment so that your skin has time to heal and improve.
